Hot Saw Positioning

GEVA Automation is a global engineering company providing process control solutions dedicated to the Long Rolling industry.

Their solution for the Hot Crop Saw Positioning Control, utilizes a closed-loop material tracking and positioning system. Initially the positioning works in open-loop coarse mode using material tracking with existing HMDs. This way the head of the bar is positioned close to the cutting position.

Once the head of the bar is in the range of the newly installed scanning position sensor, positioning is switched to closed-loop fine mode. In this mode, the position of the bar is constantly corrected (using roller table speed reference) until the head of the bar is at set position. Only then the cut will be initiated. This way it is always ensured that the cut occurs at the user requested position.

After the saw cut, an auto zeroing of the scanning position sensor is being performed. The position of the newly created head is exactly known – it is at saw position. The measured value of the scanning position sensors is stored as zero reference for future positioning. An adaptive filter is utilized to:

     - Reduce noise in evaluating zero position,
     - Immediately react to changed conditions, e. g. sensor de-adjusted due to operator bumping against it.
